Reports claiming that Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, ordered the complete dissolution of all tactical units throughout state commands have been denied by the Nigeria Police Force.
The police characterized the claims as a distortion of the IGP’s directive in a statement released by Anthony Placid, the Force Public Relations Officer.
The police said that several media sites had reported that the IGP ordered the immediate liquidation of many tactical units around the country. The force clarified that this interpretation is false, nevertheless.
The Inspector-General of Police has taken notice of the tale with the description above that was recently shared by a few internet media outlets.
According to the report, IGP Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, ordered the immediate disbandment of several tactical teams that were functioning across state commands across the country. The statement said, in part, “This report is a misrepresentation of the IGP’s directives.”
The police clarified that although the IGP respects public concerns about tactical teams’ operations, he also recognizes their vital role in combating crime.
“The IGP appreciates their contribution to crime-fighting, having held command positions around the country and observed tactical units in operation. However, he finds their proliferation unsettling as it depletes Police Divisions and Posts of necessary personnel and creates problems that compromise the integrity of the Force due to the excesses of the poorly managed teams.
“The IGP ordered the tactical teams at Zonal and State Command levels to be reduced to a maximum of five, and Area Command and Divisional levels to a maximum of three, in order to address these issues,” the police said.
The force stated that, at the option of heads of formations, this modification may be made by combining or dissolving current squads.
It also made it clear that state government-established organizations, such as the Rapid Response Squad of Lagos State, the Special Response Squad (SRS) of Oyo State, the Operation DOO-AKPOR of Bayelsa State, and similar groups throughout the nation, are exempt from the instruction.
The action is anticipated to enhance grassroots policing and address public complaints about the excesses of tactical teams by freeing up officers for deployment to police stations, according to the police.
