Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, the former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, was found guilty of a N868.46 million fraud and given a 72-year prison sentence by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, brought charges against Nwabuoku on suspicion of money laundering.
In a statement released on its official X handle on Monday, the EFCC said that the conviction was a major step in its efforts to guarantee accountability and discourage financial crimes in the public sector.
“Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, the former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, who was prosecuted by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Abuja, for money laundering involving N868.46 million, has been found guilty and sentenced to 72 years in prison,” the EFCC stated.
According to the anti-graft agency, the offenses included the misappropriation and concealment of more than N868 million in public monies.
After considering the prosecution’s evidence, which described how the money was purportedly laundered through several transactions, the court found him guilty.
The cumulative penalty for the offenses on which he was found guilty are reflected in the 72-year sentence.
Before being removed from office due to accusations of corruption, Nwabuoku held the position of Acting Accountant-General of the Federation for a short time.
