Brig.-Gen. John Sura, a previous candidate for governor on the PDP platform in the 2023 Plateau State gubernatorial election, resigned from the ruling party just three months after switching from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
With his second departure from a political party in less than a year, Gen. Sura’s resignation from the APC highlights the increasing uncertainty surrounding his future in politics.
Gen. Sura announced his resignation from the APC with immediate effect in a letter dated March 21, 2026, written to the APC Chairman of Panyam ward in the state’s Mangu Local Government Area.
Gen. Sura thanked party members for their support and cooperation throughout his brief tenure in the APC, but he did not provide any explanation for his sudden resignation.
He wrote in the letter, “I thank the leadership and members of the party for the support accorded to me while I was a member.”
In the state’s political circles, Gen. Sura’s abrupt resignation from the APC has generated a lot of discussion. Some political analysts have noted that it might be related to Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection to the APC, and many believe that the retired military officer’s chances of receiving the APC ticket for the 2027 governorship election are uncertain.
Others contend that Sura’s dream of becoming governor will be dashed because he is from the same local government area as Mutfwang, making it nearly difficult for the APC to provide him the 2027 governorship ticket.
The former general has not yet disclosed which party he plans to join, but there are rumors that he would either join the Young People’s Party (YPP) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is anticipated to begin his bid for governor.
