On Sunday, heavily armed militants besieged the Angwan Rukuba hamlet in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths and numerous injuries.

Eyewitnesses said that the incident, which left the community’s people in complete shock and sadness, started at around 8 p.m. when the more than 20 gunmen attacked the nearby suburb of Gari Yawaye and started shooting intermittently, sending residents fleeing for their lives.

The town, which is home to a number of University of Jos employees and students, was reportedly disturbed by the occurrence.

After arriving on their motorcycles, the attackers—who were dressed in the uniforms of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA—moved through various parts of the community during the operation, firing shots that killed several people and injured others, according to a local resident.

“NDLEA uniforms were worn by the assailants. Before firing from inside the store, they even purchased some goods from a vendor. The shopkeeper was fortunate to get away. “Four others weren’t fortunate,” he remarked.

The resident went on to say:

Ten people had died by the time they departed, and a number of others had been hurt by stray gunfire or while attempting to flee.

“It’s pitiful that the army and other security personnel arrived nearly an hour after the gunmen departed,” he continued.

Calls to the phones of Captain Nicholas Oteh, the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), and DSP Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for the state police, were not returned.
