Amidst the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership turmoil, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has responded to rumors that he may leave the party.
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Atiku said that he is still devoted to the party and that defection is not necessary.
According to Atiku, the party thinks David Mark’s leadership would be acknowledged by the courts.
“We think the trial court will resolve the case as quickly as possible, even before Congress,” he stated. Although we are not attorneys, we have faith that David Mark’s leadership will be upheld by the court.
Atiku emphasized that ADC has built institutions and substantial investments, making defection unnecessary, when asked about joining other political parties as a result of the crisis.
There are some parties that lack formalities. Since ADC is a coalition of the movement we founded almost a year and a half ago, a great deal of appropriation has gone into it. We are committed to completing the legal procedure and carrying on with our operations,” he said.
In response to the prospect of losing the ADC presidential ticket, Atiku said, “We have agreed… we are all leaders,” characterizing the party as a coalition of leaders that includes prominent candidates like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The former vice president’s remarks coincide with ADC resolving internal conflicts in front of the general elections in 2027.
