Tanimu Turaki, the Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, said he led a group of party members on a visit to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is led by David Mark, to show support.
Turaki said that the meeting was an important time for everyone to think about their shared commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
The PDP leader said in a post on his 𝕏 page that the event brought together important political figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other ADC leaders.
He said that the main topic of conversation at the meeting was the problems that all of the country’s opposition parties face.
Turaki says that the visit showed that more and more opposition leaders are realizing that they need to work together as political pressure rises.
He said that the PDP delegation included Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State; Adolphus Wabara, the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees; and Jerry Gana, a founding member of the party and a former Minister of Information.
Turaki said that the conversations at the meeting were honest and centered on the political challenges that opposition parties are facing. He said that this was part of a larger trend that is affecting Nigeria’s democratic plurality.
He also said that both sides were determined to protect democratic values and make sure that people who disagree with them can still speak out.
Turaki said that the meeting also showed how important it is to keep a strong opposition party as part of Nigeria’s democratic process.
The PDP leader also said that the visit showed that all political actors have a duty to put the country’s interests first, protect democratic values, and work toward a more inclusive political future.
The statement said, “Yesterday, I had the honor of leading a group from our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on a visit to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to show our support.” It was more than just a formal meeting; it was a time to think, share our worries, and reaffirm our duty to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
“As we sat across from respected leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other ADC leaders. It was clear and sobering that the problems facing opposition parties in Nigeria today are real, shared, and need everyone to work together.
I felt a strong sense of duty to lead this delegation, which included important people like His Excellency Seyi Makinde, Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President, and Prof. Jerry Gana. Not only to speak for the PDP, but also to defend democratic values that go beyond party lines.
“We talked honestly about the political and social pressures that opposition parties are facing. These things don’t happen in a vacuum; they are part of a larger trend that threatens the very idea of political diversity in our country. We came not only to support each other, but also to share our determination to face similar problems in our own party.
“The most important thing was the spirit of respect and understanding between us. Even though we had different political views, we all agreed that democracy must be protected, voices must not be silenced, and the space for healthy opposition must stay open and active.
“This trip was a reminder that there is a higher duty than politics—to Nigeria, its people, and the future we all want to build.”
