The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is worried about what it calls repeated and “shameful” refusals to let them hold their national convention in Abuja.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the head of the party’s media and publicity subcommittee for the convention, said this on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday.
Ologbondiyan said that the party had a lot of trouble finding a place to hold the event. For example, party officials were invited to check out an event center in Mabushi, Abuja, but when they got there, they were turned away.
Ologbondiyan called the situation strange and said that political pressure might be behind the repeated denials, even though the country is not yet in an election period.
Ologbondiyan said, “Let me tell you what the ADC has been through in the last few days when it comes to the venue. It’s shameful.” That’s just how to say it: very shameful.
“I’ll give you one example that I was a part of. They called us and said, “Oh, there is an event center around Mabushi, and they have invited us to come and check it out to see if it will work for us.”
“I don’t know how much you know about Abuja, but it took us about 10 to 15 minutes to get from Garki to Mabushi. When we got to the Mabushi Event Center, they called again to say they were sorry.
“They had an event coming up and needed two days to plan for it. The one we are asking for happened during that time. That’s how we were turned down.
“I don’t want to list the names of hotels and event centers that the party is using for the convention.” And were turned down.
“And to me, it’s strange because it’s not election time yet. People who say they are in government, people who have 36 governors plus the FCT Minister, and people who have all the money in the world are so scared.”
