Dan Ulasi, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says that the new alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso could change the political landscape before the 2027 elections.
Ulasi talked about the two politicians working together on Arise Television as part of a bigger effort to bring the country together.
He said, “The Peter Obi-Kwankwaso effect is part of the slow process we’re going through to build bridges across this country.”
He says that both people have a lot of power in their regions.
“Kwankwaso” is not a name you throw around in the North. He went on to say, “Peter Obi is not a name you throw out in the South.”
Ulasi was hopeful that the alliance could find a common presidential candidate within the African Democratic Congress.
“If God is kind enough to bring them together, we hope that one of them will come out on top,” he said.
The PDP leader also spoke out about the issue of power sharing between the North and South.
He said, “It is an unwritten rule that the South will have eight years.” The North has had eight years with President Muhammadu Buhari, so we have four more years to finish the South’s eight years.
But he did say that zoning is not required by the Constitution.
He said, “The Constitution of Nigeria doesn’t say so, but for the sake of confidence, so that people don’t have to fight between the North and the South.”
Ulasi said that Atiku Abubakar has the right to run for office, but his goals may not be in line with zoning rules.
He said, “Atiku Abubakar has the right to run for office, but people know that what he is doing is not right.”
Ulasi said he was sure that Obi would win the ADC ticket.
“We think he has more than a 60% chance of becoming a candidate for ADC based on what is going on in the country,” he said.
Ulasi would not say for sure what Obi should do if he doesn’t get the ticket.
“Only God knows… If he doesn’t succeed and asks me for my opinion, I would give it to him.” He said, “That stage hasn’t come yet.”
He also said that a successful alliance could lead to a new stage of political growth in Nigeria.
Ulasi said, “If we succeed… we will start a new period of growth and change for this country.” That’s what I hope.
