The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State is having more and more problems within its own ranks since Governor Abdullahi Sule chose Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
Key stakeholders have criticized the move, which was announced before the party’s official primary rules, saying that due process was not followed.
Former Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura is one of the most well-known people who said he was not consulted or told about the endorsement or the presentation of Wadada to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“I was never asked for my opinion.” “It is too early, and due process must be followed,” Al-Makura said, adding that he has no personal problem with the candidate who was endorsed.
Even though people are upset, Governor Sule has stood by his choice, saying that the endorsement came after a lot of discussion and is in line with long-standing political customs in the state.
His supporters, including Speaker Danladi Jatau and other members of the State House of Assembly, have also said they support Wadada and want the party to stay together.
But there is still a lot of opposition within the party.
Mohammed Adamu, a former Inspector General of Police who is also running for the APC ticket, has turned down the endorsement. He says that the primary will be open and fair.
The event has sparked more arguments about zoning and power rotation in the state, with different groups arguing over which district or constituency should choose the next governor.
Political experts say that if the growing disagreements aren’t handled carefully, they could hurt party unity and the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections.
