Bashir El-Rufai has asked the North to forfeit the chance to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete the remaining four years of the present political cycle.
The son of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in a post on X, expressed his personal position on the political direction of the country, calling for a continuance of Southern leadership in the next electoral cycle.
He also alluded to the possibility of a political alliance with notable figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, suggesting that a coordinated coalition with clear roles could help in solving the nation’s issues.
“Let the South finish their remaining four years,” he wrote, suggesting Northern politicians should put off their presidential ambitions until after the current cycle.
Bashir added that the opportunities for Northern candidates would remain open in the next cycle of elections, stating that 2031 would present a clear pathway for any aspirant from the region who was interested.
His comments add to the ongoing discussion on power rotation and regional balance in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
