Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has urged leaders, aspirants and supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to refrain from destructive politics.
Shettima made the call in a statement on Wednesday, urging all and sundry to exercise restraint and maintain party unity as political consultations for the 2027 general elections kick off.
In a statement titled “2027: Don’t Pull Down the Roof”, the Vice President likened the APC to a family that must not destroy its own house over internal ambitions.
He said the political season brings the familiar fever of democracy, adding that consultations have commenced across wards, local governments, party offices and private homes.
“The political season is upon us once again. We don’t need to tear the roof off. We should all stop destructive politics.
“Aspirants are making calls, elders are receiving visits, supporters are counting delegates, and the marketplace of ambition is once again alive.
“This shows that our democracy is still alive. It is proof that power in our republic is still a thing to be bargained for, fought for, argued for and earned. But every political season has its own temptations.
“It comes with the temptation to confuse disagreement with betrayal, competition with animosity, preference with exclusion and media interpretation with the truth,” the statement read in part.
