Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal has disclosed that Peter Obi was not committed to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, during his time with the party.
Lawal said this on Tuesday in Arise Television’s Prime Time interview while speaking on the recent happenings in the ADC.
His comments came after Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso left the party, citing internal disagreements and uncertainty about the party’s direction as reasons for their departure.
“We never felt his heart was in it, with Obi’s involvement in the party,” Lawal said.
“Obi came into the coalition after it was formed, and he didn’t fully integrate into its structure,” he said.
Lawal said the party leadership tried to pacify the former Anambra State governor by letting him choose the organising secretary, a position he said was very crucial in the party’s electoral processes.
“The decision is meant to assure Obi of transparency within the system, though questions still remained on his level of commitment,” he said.
Lawal also posited that Obi’s resignation could be linked to his reluctance to contest a competitive primary election.
He said the ADC is committed to ensuring a fair and open process for all aspirants saying that the party has persons with various political ambitions.
The former SGF also dismissed claims that his backing for Obi in the 2023 presidential election was a continuation of a political deal, saying their relationship then was built on common purpose.
His decisions in politics, he said, were based on personal convictions, not loyalty to any one person.
