A part-time student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, was shot dead in his car close to the main gate of the school’s Ugbowo campus.
It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday under circumstances that are not yet fully clear.
A video posted online showed the aftermath of the attack.
Reports suggested the victim had completed his semester examinations before the shooting although this has not been officially confirmed.
The management of the University of Benin has dissociated the members of the institution from the incident and said the killing might not be unconnected with suspected cult-related activities outside the university environment.
The university expressed sadness over the incident and appealed to students and staff to be calm and security conscious and continue with their academic activities in a peaceful manner.
The institution also assured the university community about its commitment to ensuring that the campus environment is safe.
As at the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had not issued any official statement on the killing.
