The Labour Party has established a National Screening Committee to screen aspirants ahead of its nomination primaries for the 2027 General Elections.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, saying the action was backed by Articles 20(1B)(d), 20(2)(d) and 27 of the Labour Party Constitution and the Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primaries.
The committee will be headed by the national chairperson of the party, Nenadi Esther Usman, it was reported. The others are Mrs Oluchi Oparah, Comrade Mohammad Salisu, Pastor Mrs Martina Umana, Mrs Deborah Yusuf, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, Dr Oluayewoh. The Hon. Secretary will be Iheanacho Obioma
The statement was co-signed by national secretary Iheanacho Obioma and Nenadi Esther Usman.
The committee is saddled with the responsibility of screening aspirants seeking the party’s tickets for the presidency, governorship and National Assembly seats. It is expected to function within the framework of the Labour Party constitution, 2026 Electoral Guidelines, the Electoral Act 2026, INEC rules and regulations and the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The panel is also expected to authenticate and complete documents submitted by aspirants, ensure compliance with statutory and party eligibility requirements and recommend qualified candidates for the primaries.
Also, it is required to submit its report within the time frame set in the party’s schedule of activities and perform any other duties assigned by the national leadership.
With preparations for 2027 gathering pace, the party has urged committee members to execute their responsibilities with integrity and in the overall interest of the party.
The release of the party’s schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections earlier, followed by the submission of completed nomination forms and the commencement of screening, is scheduled to commence on Monday May 18.
