Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, erred by contesting the 2027 presidential primary on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Wike was quoted as saying he would have advised Amaechi against contesting the ADC presidential ticket if the former governor of Rivers State had consulted him.
He spoke in Abuja on Monday during his monthly media chat.
Wike, who was Chief of Staff under Amaechi when he was governor of Rivers State, said the structure of the ADC showed that the primary would not be transparent.
“I see Amaechi as my brother. I was chief of staff in his government. When I saw him running with them, I knew what would happen. ‘If he had called me I would have said, ‘Don’t go there.’ “It was pretty clear he was not going to get transparency or due process,” Wike said.
The FCT minister alleged that the arrangement of the party was meant to favour former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar.
The emergence of former Senate President David Mark as ADC chairman showed the direction the primary would take, he said.
“When I saw the setup in ADC and saw David Mark there, I giggled. Once you’ve worked with these people, you know who is who and what they can do. That was Atiku’s setup 100 per cent,” he said.
Wike said Amaechi should have known better than to be in the race.
“You can’t set a trap for me. We are politicians. Who said that kind of structure would give you transparency. Who told you that kind of structure would lead to free and fair elections?” he asked.
I think my brother was wrong. He was too hurried. People took him away shouting that this government is no good. ‘They used that to bring people in, to get themselves credibility,’ he said.
