Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), on Friday held a closed door meeting with the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) in a bid to resolve issues arising from the party’s recent primary elections.
The meeting lasted for about three hours and came amid growing concerns over internal disagreements and fallout from the NDC primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson, in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page shortly after the meeting, disclosed details of the meeting.
The former Bayelsa State governor said the meeting availed party leaders the opportunity to review the recent developments in the NDC and respond to the concerns raised by the members.
“I just received my brother, colleague and partner in the New Nigerian Project, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, CON, our presidential candidate, who, along with some distinguished leaders of our party, held a closed-door meeting which lasted about three hours,” Dickson said.
“During that meeting we reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a cause of concern to all sides and we amicably resolved all the issues.
Dickson said the two leaders remained resolute in their determination to ensure victory for the NDC and dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He acknowledged there had been disagreements inside the party but said there was a framework agreed to address such issues in the future.
“We have always been on the same page on the bigger picture, that is, winning the elections for all candidates of our party and rescuing Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC-led government,” he said.
“But there have been some issues and we have agreed how to handle these moving forward.”
NDC leader urged party members to put aside internal disputes and focus on strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name calling and focus on the bigger picture,” he said.
Dickson said continuous consultations between party leaders and stakeholders would help to strengthen unity and cohesion within the NDC.
“His Excellency Peter Obi and I, along with other leaders and stakeholders of our party, will continue to consult and engage one another to address and resolve concerns, strengthen the unity and cohesion of our party, and ensure that we remain focused on our shared mission of rescuing Nigeria and building a better future for all,” he added.
