Two others and a 22-year-old resident, Abdulmalik Bakare were killed when suspected cultists reportedly attacked Oreta community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The father of the deceased, Tunde Bakare, said the incident happened on Wednesday and six suspects have been arrested.
Bakare told journalists Sunday that the Divisional Police Officer handling the case had assured the family that a thorough investigation would be carried out.
“The DPO promised that the case will be thoroughly investigated,” he stated.
When our correspondent visited the community on Sunday, there was an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the whole area and residents were still trying to recover from the violence.
The findings indicated that the attack could have been linked to an earlier clash between a trailer driver and a gang of suspected hoodlums on Gbogbo Road.
A resident who identified himself only as Fasasi said armed men on motorcycles stormed the community around 8 p.m. and started shooting indiscriminately.
Tensions had escalated earlier in the day when some youths reportedly stopped a trailer carrying a container and demanded money from the driver, he said.
He said the driver insisted that some people at a junction near where he was parked had collected N350,000 as payment from his employers.
It was the afternoon. Some boys stopped a trailer driver carrying a container at Gbogbo to collect money from him. The driver said they had paid already. Their Chinese owners said they paid N350,000 to their bosses at the junction.
‘But they said no. As they were dragging it at the junction, one of the area boys who climbed the trailer was caught under the tyre and died. “The police said they settled it and it was an accident,” Fasasi said.
He said some of the youths regrouped after the incident and later launched a retaliatory attack on the community.
“In the night, they rounded up their gang members and raided the community on bikes. They got to Oreta and started shooting.
“They killed him when he was about to close his shop. They also shot dead a physically challenged child who was eating. They began breaking shops and smashing glass doors. “A man who had come to buy fish was also shot dead,” he added.
The identities of the other victims had not been confirmed at the time of this report.
The attack sparked panic throughout the community, causing many people to flee and commercial activities to be abruptly disrupted, residents said.
Attempts to get an official comment from the Lagos State Police Command were not successful.
As of the time of filing this report, calls and text messages to the spokesperson of the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, were not answered.
