The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has said that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is the only candidate that has accounted for campaign spending.
Tanko made this known on Tuesday while being interviewed on Arise Television’s ‘Day Break’.
Obi, he said, was different because he always called for accountability and transparency.
He said: “I was there when Aisha Yesufu and Peter Obi employed an independent auditor to investigate their campaign finances.
“They gave a full statement of all the money spent in the campaign. I would like to see the same level of transparency from other major parties, including APC and PDP.
“Peter Obi stood out because he was committed to accountability and transparency which he always preached during the campaign.
“So he made sure that those accounts were rendered to the public and I think it’s a public document and will be accessed by everybody.”
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has expressed concern about what he described as the increasing loss of confidence in Nigeria’s public institutions, saying the development is affecting trust in governance, the judiciary and the economy.
Obi took to his 𝕏 page to reflect on earlier fear he had about the controversy surrounding the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
At the time, the former governor of Anambra State said he feared the situation could send a negative message about the independence and strength of Nigeria’s institutions to the international community.
Obi said the Federal High Court ruling that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress and some other political parties further erodes public confidence in the legal system and should be reviewed.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate said the country should not weaken its institutions for political reasons, noting that countries become stronger when institutions are more powerful than individuals.
He wrote: “The federal High Court Judgement ordering the de-registration of the ADC and other political parties is just one of those activities that further reduces the common man’s trust in our legal systems” he should be reversed.
“I promise that we will restore the dignity, independence and integrity of the Judiciary. There must be a voice for the common man. The business community must be protected against legal uncertainty and intimidation. Justice should be accessible, equitable and honored by all.
“To our judges, legal luminaries, senior advocates and lawyers, this is your time. “Stand up, defend the rule of law, take back your country!”
