National secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has revealed more details of the party’s internal crisis on legislative tickets, including the role played by it’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the process.
Enekweizu said this on Channels Television, adding that Obi had supported activist Aisha Yesufu for the House of Representatives seat representing AMAC/Bwari during consultations held before the elections.
He said the recommendation was part of a process by party leaders to agree on candidates before final names are submitted.
The talks were reportedly intended to lessen internal divisions and help the party enter the election season with a united position.
Yesufu however, decided to go for a senatorial ticket rather than the House of Representatives slot that had been suggested during consultations, despite the proposal.
“Peter Obi told me personally that he wanted Aisha Yesufu to contest for the House of Representatives for AMAC/Bwari. But she went Senate.
“Normally political parties tell their members which offices they should contest for so that there is a balance and they have better chances in elections,” he said.
Aspirants are free to make their own choices but party leadership generally tries to accommodate individual ambitions within the larger plans of the organisation, he said.
The NDC secretary also spoke on the concerns of aspirants who did not get party tickets.
He said disappointment in political contests is common and the party has a process in place to deal with complaints and resolve disputes among members.
He said the leadership is still committed to ensuring that there is no division within the party despite the differences that may arise on the way to the selection.
The party officials were working to make sure that the disagreements did not affect preparations for future elections, he said.
