Any governor who misuses state police will be sanctioned, says Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu.
Adaramodu made the remark on Wednesday in an interview on Arise Television while responding to questions.
He was talking about the State Police Bill, which the Senate passed Wednesday, and which has been controversial.
“Those who steal state police, federal authorities will come for them, governors included. If a governor is found to be using state police to promote a partisan, religious or sectional purpose, the federal police may step in.
“The law says that if the federal police are found to be acting outside the constitutional mandate, then it is lawful for them to take on the roles and functions of a state police force.
“These are important protections to ensure that no one is using state police for personal or political interests,” he said.
The lawmaker also revealed that the state police will be funded by both the federal and state governments.
“The expense of state police will not be borne solely by the states.
“The federal government will also come in by providing additional funding to make sure that state police are well equipped and well resourced to carry out the increasing security responsibilities that have been placed upon them,” he said.
