NIJ Students’ Week 2026: Bonfire Rally, Career Talks and Public Speaking Competition Inspire Students

The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, commenced its 2026 Students’ Week with a series of engaging activities designed to foster learning, networking, creativity and personal development among students.
One of the major highlights of the week-long celebration was the “Brain and Vibes” Bonfire Rally, which brought students together in a relaxed atmosphere filled with excitement, entertainment and camaraderie.
The event featured the ceremonial lighting of the bonfire, around which students gathered to dance, interact and strengthen relationships with their colleagues. The rally provided participants with an opportunity to unwind from academic activities while promoting unity and social engagement among members of the institution.
Career Day Focuses on Communication and Workplace Success
As part of the Students’ Week activities, NIJ also hosted its annual Career Day, featuring a panel session and public speaking competition aimed at preparing students for professional success.
The panel session brought together industry professionals who shared practical insights on workplace communication, personal branding, leadership and career development. Discussions centred on how students can effectively market themselves in both traditional and digital spaces, build confidence and remain relevant in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
Speaking during the session, Adedolapo Wale-Kehinde, Head of Human Resources Consulting and Training at The Why Consulting, emphasized the importance of communication skills in today’s workplace.
According to her, communication goes beyond speaking and writing, describing it as the ability to express ideas, intentions and creativity in a manner that others can understand and appreciate.
“Communication means having the ability to express your ideas, your intentions and your imagination in a way that people can understand and accept,” she said.
Wale-Kehinde, who has a background in corporate finance, investment banking and human resources management, also advised students to maintain discipline, professionalism and a strong work ethic throughout their careers.
She further stressed the importance of respect and inclusiveness in leadership, noting that effective leaders must understand their environment and create opportunities for everyone to contribute.
The session encouraged students to build strong personal brands and continually develop their skills to remain competitive in the media and communication industry.
Students Showcase Speaking Skills
The Career Day programme also featured a public speaking competition that tested participants’ ability to articulate ideas confidently under pressure.
Contestants included Amaloe Josephine, Dada Adeyemi Olanike, Benita Chioma Mabawonku, Mobolaji Chelsea Dolapo, Mosaku Kehinde and Mohammed Tolani Lateefat.
Participants spoke on topical issues, including the theme: “Is Nigerian Culture Enduringly Helping the Youth or Hurting Them?”
At the end of the competition, Benita Chioma Mabawonku emerged as the winner, while Amaloe Josephine secured second place and Mohammed Tolani Lateefat finished third.
Ayodeji Razaq Highlights Power of Networking in Communication
Another major highlight of the Career Day was the keynote address delivered by Ayodeji Razaq, Chief Executive Officer of Red Africa.
Speaking on the theme, “The Power of Communication in Every Industry,” Razaq shared valuable insights on communication, leadership, networking and the evolving media landscape.
He noted that advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have transformed communication practices, making it easier than ever to create and execute communication campaigns.
“AI has made it possible for anyone, anywhere, to write a press release, build a media campaign and execute it within seconds,” he said.
However, he stressed that while technology continues to evolve, human relationships remain at the heart of effective communication.
“The biggest tool in communication today is your network. The most important thing you are learning here is how to build relationships,” he added.
Drawing from his 17 years of experience in strategic communication, Razaq encouraged students to prioritize integrity, pursue excellence and prepare themselves to become the next generation of media professionals and industry leaders.
He concluded by urging aspiring journalists to remain ethical, innovative and committed to making meaningful contributions to society.
The Students’ Week activities continue to provide NIJ students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, connect with industry experts and develop the skills needed to excel in the dynamic world of media and communication.
