The rescue of pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has been welcomed across the state, but for the family of late teacher Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, the moment has come with mixed emotions.
The victims regained their freedom on Friday after spending more than 50 days in captivity, ending weeks of uncertainty and anxiety for their families. While many celebrated the successful rescue, Oyedokun’s relatives said their happiness remained incomplete because the teacher lost his life during the attack.
Reacting to the development, the late teacher’s niece, Oluwabukolami, shared an emotional message on Instagram, saying she rejoiced with the families whose loved ones had safely returned home.
According to her, the release of the victims marks the end of a difficult chapter for many families who had lived in fear since the kidnapping took place.
She congratulated the rescued teachers and pupils, describing their return as a blessing and a source of hope after weeks of uncertainty.
However, she stressed that her own family continues to struggle with the painful reality that Michael Oyedokun will never come back.

She described her uncle as a victim whose life was violently taken, saying the rescue of the remaining captives could not remove the grief his death had caused.
“Our joy is not complete,” she said, explaining that the family would forever live with the empty space left by the late teacher’s absence.
According to her, although the successful rescue offers some comfort, the loss of Oyedokun remains a permanent wound that time cannot easily heal.
She also paid tribute to his memory, saying he would always be remembered for his dedication and the impact he made during his lifetime.
The release of the abducted pupils and teachers has been widely praised, with families and members of the affected school communities expressing gratitude over the safe return of their loved ones after more than seven weeks in captivity.
While celebrations continue across Oyo State following the rescue operation, the Oyedokun family said they remain focused on preserving the memory of their beloved relative, whose death continues to cast a shadow over an otherwise joyful occasion.
