SOKAPU Alleges Threats From Umahi, Insists on Independent Probe Into Mary Habila’s Death
The controversy surrounding the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist, Mary Habila, has taken a fresh turn as the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) intensified its campaign for an independent investigation while accusing the Minister of Works, David Umahi, of attempting to intimidate the group over legal action it instituted against him.
Habila reportedly died under circumstances that have remained the subject of public debate at Umahi’s country residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. While questions continue to surround the circumstances leading to her death, SOKAPU has maintained that only an independent forensic investigation can provide answers and restore public confidence in the case.
The group has filed a suit before the Kaduna State High Court seeking a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The case, marked KDH/KAF/26/2026, requests the court to order an independent forensic autopsy, a fresh police investigation and an award of ₦20 billion in damages against the Minister of Works.
According to SOKAPU, Habila died under what it described as “unexplained, controversial and unnatural circumstances.” The organisation further alleged that her remains were moved to a mortuary before the Nigeria Police Force was formally notified, raising concerns about the handling of the case.
As part of its prayers before the court, SOKAPU is asking for an independent autopsy to be conducted by a panel of pathologists drawn from the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the National Hospital, Abuja. The group also wants the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation before Habila’s body is released for burial.
In addition to the forensic examination, SOKAPU is demanding ₦20 billion in compensation, arguing that Umahi owed the deceased a duty of care while she was allegedly under his custody and supervision at the time of the incident.

Addressing journalists during an emergency press conference on Tuesday, SOKAPU’s National President, Tabara Samuel Kato, alleged that he received a WhatsApp call from the Minister shortly after news of the lawsuit became public.
According to Kato, the call came at about 9:39 a.m. on July 28, following his appearance on Channels Television and the filing of the court action.
Kato claimed that Umahi introduced himself during the conversation before expressing displeasure over the legal action.
According to him, the minister allegedly said: “I am David Umahi, the Honourable Minister of Works. I saw your suit against me. You need money, right? I will teach you a lesson of your life such that you will learn never to mess with a person like me. I will give you 10 lawsuits. People are mourning and there you are taking me to court. I will deal with you.”
SOKAPU described the alleged comments as an attempt to intimidate its leadership and discourage the organisation from pursuing legal redress.
The union insisted that its decision to seek judicial intervention was lawful and in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. It stressed that the legal action was aimed at ensuring transparency and justice for the deceased and her family rather than targeting any individual.
“Our decision to seek judicial intervention and file a suit is entirely within the bounds of the Nigerian Constitution and is meant to protect the dignity and rights of our people. No intimidation will work in this matter,” the group stated.
Reaffirming its position, SOKAPU maintained that Mary Habila should not be buried until an independent forensic autopsy is carried out and all unresolved issues surrounding her death are thoroughly investigated.
The organisation also called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, the Inspector-General of Police, and other relevant security agencies to take note of the alleged threats against its leadership and ensure that those seeking justice are protected.
The latest development comes only days after SOKAPU instituted a fundamental rights enforcement suit against David Umahi, the Attorney-General of Ebonyi State, the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, and Habila’s father, Habila Tanko Wisdom.
As public interest in the case continues to grow, attention is expected to shift to the Kaduna State High Court, where the legal proceedings could determine whether an independent forensic investigation will be ordered to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death.
