The Federal Government, acting through the Ministry of Interior, has been urged by the House of Representatives to immediately provide sufficient security for Transmission Towers nationwide in order to prevent vandalism in the future.

Oboku Oforji’s motion of urgent public concern, which was adopted at plenary on Tuesday, called for the Federal Government to immediately provide sufficient protection for transmission towers in Rivers, Bayelsa, and throughout the nation. This was followed by the House’s resolution.

Owing to the collapse of a transmission station between Emezhi and Mbaima in the Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, as well as three others between Igbogene and Nedugo Agbia in the state’s Yenagoa LGA, residents of Yenagoa and Bayelsa State in general woke up to a complete blackout on July 29, 2024, Oforji moved the motion.

He clarified that the Transmission Company of Nigeria, or TCN, and the Bayelsa State Government immediately moved to solve the issues that have led to a decline in the state’s socioeconomic activity.

As the work was almost finished at Ula-Akpata in Ahoada East LGA of Rivers State, the lawmaker voiced concern that some thugs went and damaged a portion of the lines on November 19, 2024.

“The Bayelsa State Government’s efforts to mobilize material and financial resources to support the TCN are highly commendable,” he said.

To prevent future instances of vandalism of these Transmission Towers, aggressive steps must be taken, Ohorji continued.

“As a representative of my people, this reminds me of the provisions of Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which discuss our economic and social rights as citizens, which I think the government should not take for granted.”
