A coalition of civil society organizations, led by the Network for South East Development (NET-Southeast), has encouraged Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to put regional peace and stability over personal interests.
At a meeting in Enugu to assess their actions for the year, NET-Southeast highlighted concerns about recent nominations to the South East Development Commission’s (SEDC) board.
The group warns that the tensions could worsen and jeopardize regional progress.
While acknowledging Governor Uzodinma’s contributions to regional development, the group emphasized that leadership should not focus around a single individual.
In a joint statement, the coalition’s chairman, Dr. Comos Gilbert Egede, and secretary, Comrade Nwagwu Nwaeke, stated their worries.
“The SEDC board appointments have been dogged by controversy, with claims of a power struggle between Governor Uzodinma and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
“According to media sources, Governor Uzodinma influenced the original list of board nominees, while Kalu worked to edit and release a second list that was regarded more representative.
“We are not concerned with who becomes chairman or executive director. It is about peace, cooperation, and ensuring that the South East grows as envisaged,” the statement continued.
The coalition urged Governor Uzodinma to refrain from any actions that could further destabilize the region.
“Governor Hope should put down his sword and let peace prevail for the sake of our people. “We must avoid actions that have the potential to heat up the region in pursuit of personal ambitions,” the group urged.
They also asked the Ndi-Igbo to support political leaders who are dedicated to improving the region’s development.

“The formation of the SEDC represents an unprecedented opportunity for us. “Let us not let vested interests tarnish this achievement,” they said.
NET-Southeast also stressed the necessity of South East leaders working together, pushing them to imitate leaders such as Deputy Speaker Kalu, who supported the SEDC law.
“We urge important political figures to work together for the development of the South East. “The days of personal gain at the expense of regional progress must come to an end,” the organization stated.
“The South East Development Commission was formed to help repair, develop, and empower our people. We ask our leaders to put their own interests aside and provide the peace and stability required to carry out this vision,” the statement continued.
