The death of one of their colleagues, Chinedu Nwowu, by unidentified gunmen has prompted Imo State lawyers to temporarily suspend legal activities in three regions of the state.
As a sign of respect for the mrudered lawyer, it was decided that on Thursday, January 24, courts in the three areas of Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma would not run.
It was reported that on Wednesday, January 22, Nwowu was ambushed and killed by a group of gunmen in his village of Mgbidi.
When he was driving, the shooters ambushed him, double crossed his car, and shot him, according to sources close to the late lawyer and his companions.
With the announcement of a boycott of court proceedings today by the Orlu leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Nwowu’s passing has continued to incite fear and some indignation.
The NBA’s Orli chapter’s memo, signed by Chukwuemeka Okoro, stated that the announcement was made in protest of their member’s death.
An emergency meeting is scheduled to occur in Mgbidi at 10 a.m., according to Okro.

“All lawyers of Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning by 10am at the High Court, Mgbidi, following the gruesome murder of one of us, CHINEDU NWOWU, last night in his town, Mgbidi,” Okoro stated.
The High Courts in Mgbidi, Oguta, and Omumma will not convene today. Kindly arrive on time,” he said.
