In anticipation of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, political strategists are already setting themselves up for a run at the nation’s top job.
There are new coalitions and changes among the 19 recognized political parties, and certain political players are looking into special purpose companies to fulfill their goals of taking control of Aso Rock, Nigeria’s capital in Abuja.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has become a major force in the political drama, as evidenced by the fact that seven presidential candidates have already lined up under its program.
Olu Agunloye, the party’s national secretary, made this revelation during an interview with the sociopolitical program Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television.

Eight people are running for president, but there may be ten. Former Steel Minister Agunloye stated in the interview, “We have seven of them on our platform.”

“We can’t afford to lose any of the interested politicians to other parties,” Agunloye said, indicating that the SDP would make every effort to keep these candidates, even though he would not name them.

In addition, Agunloye disclosed that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, had requested that the SDP draft the party’s platform in the event that Obi decides to join.

We were approached by Obi’s representatives, who asked whether we would take him if he came. Of course, we told them: ‘Yes,’’” Agunloye clarified, adding that although Obi hasn’t made an official announcement yet, his followers have approached the SDP.

“Some of them are with us saying that they are preparing the ground but you have to join SDP,” provided Agunloye with further details. In order for us to welcome you, you cannot be a member of the Labour Party and tell us that Obi is coming without actually joining us.
Obi may or may not intend to join the SDP, but the party is ready for any scenario, Agunloye said, even though the discussion surrounding Obi’s possible flip is still vague.

“But Obi might want to come or he might not have any plans to come.” Individuals engage in all of this, but our position is to perform well within our platform,” Agunloye confirmed.
