According to Senator Gabriel Suswam, a former governor of Benue State, the PDP needs to put more emphasis on visionary leadership and genuine candidates than on money and political pressure if it hopes to restore political clout before the next general elections.
In an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, Suswam criticized the PDP’s present leadership, calling it dishonest and disorganized.
First and first, the PDP needs transparent national leadership, which will then be translated into state leadership. That is not what we have. It all comes down to dishonesty,” he remarked.
Despite having numerous national structures, Suswam contended that the PDP’s influence has drastically decreased as a result of subpar internal management and a decline in public trust.
“This party has structures across the nation.” Due to poor leadership, that has significantly decreased,” he continued.
Drawing attention to the problem of choosing candidates, the former governor cautioned against the tendency for people to base their aspirations for president only on their financial situation.
Every single person wants to run for president since they have little money in their bank accounts and other individuals have small amounts of change here and there. That is the situation,” he stated.
Instead of depending on endorsements or influence, he advised candidates to honestly evaluate themselves and look for public support.

“If I evaluate myself and determine that I lack the necessary support, I will not go. People simply don’t want to argue, though. They say, “Well, we don’t want that because this one wants to contest.” That isn’t how party politics operate.
Suswam also offered his thoughts on the persistent misunderstanding around the PDP National Secretary position. He mockingly said, “Ask the Supreme Court,” when asked who is currently in the job.
He criticized the judiciary for not shedding light on the issue.
As the highest court in the nation, we anticipated that the Supreme Court would have been extremely knowledgeable. There is an issue if there is misunderstanding and the parties take the matter to court and you return it to them,” he stated.
He said that although the Supreme Court declined to issue a final decision, returning the case back as an internal party matter, the Court of Appeal had previously ruled that Senator Samuel Anyanwu was the legitimate Secretary.
“We thought the Supreme Court would have been more clear-cut than they actually were.” He stated, “There is more confusion because they weren’t.”
When the meeting finally takes place, Suswam said, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) will decide the issue as a whole.
