Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has expressed worries about the defection of PDP governors to the APC, claiming that it marks a shift toward authoritarianism in Nigeria.
In an interview with the Daily Sun, he indicated that he is not shocked by the multiple defections, claiming that Nigeria is steadily going toward dictatorship.
Muhammad-Baba added, “I am not really surprised by the development, but it is still speculation. Delta’s governor has deserted. However, two days ago, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal stated that he will stay a PDP governor. So, let us wait and see what occurs.
“This isn’t surprising. We are advancing toward tyranny not only in the administration process, but also in the organization of political parties. Do not forget that the PDP has been throttling since the 2023 election. The party is fragmented, with some members siding with the APC. Nyesom Wike, Minister of FCT, admitted to being a PDP member but identified more with the APC than with its people.

Muhammad-Baba noted the growing desperation for the 2027 polls, stating, “The administration is marshaling all resources at its disposal for the election. It is coercing or convincing governors and other political leaders to support the government, as well as certain legislators to return to the APC in exchange for automatic seats.
He also highlighted that voters should decide the issue, but lamented, “If only they could have their way, which appears increasingly unlikely. So, personally, I would say, “Let us wait and see.” What have we never seen before? It is happening right now, and it may continue. “It is a sad political development.”
