According to reports, a boat accident in the Gbajibo-Mudi community of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State killed 37 people on Thursday.

According to reliable accounts, the boat was overcrowded with more than 100 passengers on board, however some survived.

The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, Abubakar Abdullahi, and the community’s Emir, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar, are currently coordinating rescue operations.

The boat was apparently on its way to one of Niger State’s localities when the unfortunate tragedy occurred about 6:00 p.m.

The majority of passengers on board were traders traveling for commercial activities in Niger State.

A similar catastrophe occurred on October 5, 2024, in Gbajibo-Mudi hamlet, when travelers travelling for the Islamic Maulid celebration were killed owing to overloading. That catastrophe killed over 200 lives, and the state government paid N2 million to pay survivors’ medical expenses.
