Many children have died as a result of a diphtheria outbreak in the Mbutu Community, which is in the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State. As a result, schools in the area have been forced to close immediately.
Iheukwumere Alaribe, the Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, attested to this fact in a statement issued on May 26, 2025.
At the time of filing this story, however, it was not possible to confirm the exact number of fatalities.
The toxin-producing bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the source of the highly contagious disease known as diphtheria, which mainly affects the throat and nasal passages but can also affect the skin, according to reports.
Either direct touch with an infected person or contaminated surface, or respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, can spread the disease.
When the outbreak occurred, the local authorities acted quickly to stop the spread of the disease.
Parents are being asked to keep their children indoors as schools in Mbutu have been temporarily closed.
Less than a week after its onset, diphtheria killed the children.
The World Health Organization (WHO), the Imo State Ministry of Health’s Department of Disease Prevention and Control, and medical personnel from Aboh Mbaise LGA were putting in a lot of effort to look into and limit the outbreak, according to the chairman.
“An isolation center has been set up at Mbutu Health Center, with medical personnel sent to quarantine children who might have been exposed to the disease and to care for impacted families,” said Godspower Dike, the chairman’s spokesperson.
Alaribe also exhorted parents to rush their children’s vaccinations.
Parents are urgently encouraged to vaccinate their children as soon as possible in light of this outbreak.
He said, “Vaccinations are essential for halting the spread of diseases and safeguarding the health of our kids.”
Dike, the spokesman for the chairman, urged everyone to maintain composure and assist the health officials.

Two children in the Tukur-Tukur hamlet in Zaria, Kaduna State, died from the disease during the first week of May.
Vaccination is a preventative measure against diphtheria.
The need of routine vaccination has been emphasized by health professionals as a means of protecting children against diseases like diphtheria.
In 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 350 local government units, Nigeria has reported 25,812 confirmed cases of diphtheria out of 42,642 suspected cases; confirmed cases are spread throughout 184 LGAs in 26 states.
According to the latest situation report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which covers the period from week 19 of 2022 to week 10 of 2025, the outbreak had killed 1,319 people as of March 9, 2025.
