The remarks made by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido regarding the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election have drawn harsh criticism from Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake. According to Lamido’s recent television interview, market women were escorted to Abuja by Tinubu’s mother, the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, to show support for the military government, and Tinubu himself backed the annulment of the election. The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he added, was established to support the late General Sani Abacha rather than to fight for June 12.
In response, Lamido’s claims were rejected by Alake as untrue and a misrepresentation of history. Lamido, the former secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was accused by him of conspiring to violate the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola’s directive. Alake claims that Lamido and the former chairman of the SDP sold off Abiola’s victory by agreeing to the establishment of the National Interim Government (NIG) following the annulment of the election.

Tinubu played a crucial role in ensuring Abiola’s candidacy at the SDP Jos conference, according to Alake, who emphasized Tinubu’s involvement in the June 12 struggle. He disclosed that MKO became the party’s flagbearer after Tinubu facilitated an agreement that persuaded Atiku Abubakar to resign in favor of Abiola.
Alake called Lamido’s comments revisionist, saying, “Lamido’s claims are lies from the pit of hell.” He is making an effort to hide his involvement in the June 12 treachery. He added that the only thing Tinubu’s mother wanted to do was ask Abacha to reinstate Abiola’s mandate.
