The Adamawa State Government has abolished the traditional title of Wazirin Adamawa, which was previously held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This comes after a new policy was put into place that prohibits non-indigenous people from holding positions as traditional council members or kingmakers.
Although Atiku is not an indigenous person of the Adamawa Emirate, where the Waziri title is bestowed, he is originally from Jada in the Ganye Emirate and was granted the title in November 2018 by Muhammadu Barkindo, the Lamido of Adamawa.

On June 19, 2025, Adama Felicity Mamman, the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, signed a circular issuing the directive. Kingmakers and council members who are not native to their respective emirates or chiefdoms must be removed immediately by all traditional councils, according to the circular.
According to the circular,
“All members of the state’s Kingmakers and Councils must be native to their respective chiefdoms. Regardless of the municipal government of origin, those with honorary traditional titles, however, are free to keep their posts.
By virtue of the new regulations, Atiku, who was promoted from Turakin Adamawa to Wazirin Adamawa, is no longer able to serve on the Adamawa Emirate Council.
In response to questions, Chief Press Secretary Humwashi Wonosikou of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri explained that while the directive is not new, it is currently being formally implemented. Despite Atiku’s long-standing residence and voter registration in Yola, he pointed out that only the Lamido of Adamawa can decide whether he is an indigenous person.

Wonosikou contended that the strategy is solely administrative and rejected rumors of a political confrontation between Atiku and Governor Fintiri. No rift exists between them. “The goal of the directive is to guarantee integrity and loyalty in traditional councils,” he stated.
After a new chieftaincy law was ratified by the Adamawa State House of Assembly in December 2024, seven new emirates and chiefdoms were established. The state now has 14 traditional councils as a result of this.
According to Paul Ibe, Atiku’s spokesperson, he was not aware of any formal correspondence that would have affected the former vice president’s traditional title.
