Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, is on trial for corruption in Malabo and faces up to 18 years in jail.
According to reports, Engonga, the former head of his country’s anti-graft organization, was recently caught up in a controversy that rattled the country’s political elite.
Engonga, who has been incarcerated in the notorious Black Beach Prison since September 2024, is on trial for misappropriation of public funds, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office while serving as Director General of Insurance and Reinsurance from 2015 until 2020.
At Monday’s hearing, the national prosecutor demanded a total sentence of 18 years for the beleaguered former official:
Eight years for embezzlement.
4 years and 5 months for illicit enrichment.
Six years and one day for misuse of office.
Engonga is facing a fine of nearly 910 million CFA francs (roughly $1.5 million or ₦2.2 billion) and a ban from holding public office throughout his term.
Prosecutors claimed that Engonga orchestrated a complex financial network that siphoned state cash for personal gain, a scam that stifled crucial public sector growth.

The Engonga sex tape scandal shook Equatorial Guinea.
According to Naija News, investigators discovered over 400 sex films during searches on Engonga’s private office and house a few months ago, in a remarkable turn of events that captivated the nation.
According to Le Bled Parle, the cassettes include wives of senior ministers, security officers, and relatives of high government figures. Authorities said the tapes, which were filmed with consent, were discovered on CDs and hard drives, and many of them have already been published online, provoking public outrage and requests for more investigations.
Engonga is not in court alone. Six former high officials, including Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong and Florentina Iganga Iñandji, are on trial for allegedly being part of a graft syndicate that pillaged public resources.
The trial, which has captivated national and international onlookers, is set to last throughout the week as defense lawyers deliver their case.
This case has increased pressure on Equatorial Guinea’s government to tighten its anti-corruption frameworks, improve transparency, and hold all officials accountable, regardless of their level.
