The Nigeria Customs Service Comptroller-General, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has been given one additional year by President Bola Tinubu.

As of August 31, 2025, Adewale was scheduled to retire.

In a statement released on Thursday, Presidential Spokesman Mr. Bayo Onanuga confirmed the most recent development, postponing the decision to permit Adeniyi to finalize important efforts of this administration and solidify existing reforms.

The presidency cited the necessity to modernize the Nigeria Customs Service, the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s responsibilities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol as some of the justifications for the tenure extension.

In full, Onanuga said, “The Presidency announces that Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, has had his tenure extended by one year. His term was originally scheduled to expire on August 31, 2025.

“The extension, which was granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, will allow Mr. Adeniyi to finish important projects and consolidate ongoing reforms, such as modernizing the Nigeria Customs Service, implementing the National Single Window Project, and carrying out Nigeria’s responsibilities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) contract.

The unwavering leadership and dedication to duty demonstrated by Mr. Adeniyi are acknowledged by President Tinubu.

“With this extension, the Nigeria Customs Service will be even more equipped to fulfill its strategic mandate of border security, revenue generation, and trade facilitation,” the president said.
