There are attempts to suspend Dr. Grace Adagba, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in Benue State.
Remember how the Benue State House of Assembly approved a resolution a few days ago calling on Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia to suspend the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) chairman?
Additionally, Mr. Denen Aondoakaa, Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, was instructed by the Assembly to immediately stop releasing cash to the board.
Hon. Bemdoo Ipusu made the motion, accusing Dr. Adagba of avoiding an ad hoc committee that the House had established to look into alleged unlawful activities inside SUBEB.
Ipusu told the House that in order to prevent the legislature from carrying out its constitutional oversight duties, the chairman had issued a letter rejecting the legislature’s jurisdiction to look into contracts that the board awarded.
During the debate, lawmakers unanimously supported Dr. Adagba’s suspension, expressing strong dissatisfaction of her actions and pointing to her numerous clashes with the House.
It was learned that this is the third time the Benue State Assembly and the SUBEB chairman had battled.
Hon. Bemdoo Ipusu, the motion’s sponsor, pointed to Dr. Adagba’s nonattendance at an ad hoc committee meeting that examined SUBEB’s operations.
Political analysts point out that the decision was made at a time when tensions over the hiring of teachers are rising between the government and legislative.
The Daily Independent was unable to independently confirm suggestions that the conflict might be connected to more extensive political scheming in the state.
It is thought, therefore, that the resolution suspending Adagba did not adhere to the standard legislative procedure.

SUBEB was not initially on the list of agencies to be investigated, according to a video of the House plenary where the Ad Hoc Committee on State-Wide Contract Verification was established independently. This led observers to speculate that the call for her suspension might have been made for political reasons. Our correspondent was able to obtain this video.
According to a committee member who spoke to our correspondent anonymously, this is true. “Our original scope did not include SUBEB at all. On Tuesday, August 5, while we were dining together, the subject of her suspension unexpectedly came up,” the insider stated.
The controversy apparently started earlier this year when the Assembly halted a SUBEB-run state-wide teacher recruiting process, according to the Daily Independent.
According to sources, tensions increased as contract awards for projects supported by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) became contentious. According to reports, several MPs sought to sway the contracts, but Adagba insisted on proper process and rejected.
Recall that on August 4, Adagba allegedly wrote to the Assembly committee to express her willingness to appear before it, provided she was given at least 30 days to prepare her documentation.
But the House suspended her the very following day after passing the measure.
The problem may harm Benue’s ties with UBEC and other donor organizations, which frequently condition financing on openness and adherence to regulations, according to observers.
