To help families who were displaced by the June 13, 2025, massacre, leaders of the Yelewata community in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area have urged the state government to build 100 two-bedroom apartments immediately.
Recall that during the incident, armed herdsmen allegedly broke into the community, burning down houses, market stalls, and other buildings while killing over 200 people, including women and children.
Speaking to reporters in Yelewata on Thursday, community leader and spokesperson Matthew Mnyan, accompanied by women, youth leaders, and elders, called the circumstances for survivors intolerable.
It’s been too much for us. In a single day, more than 200 of our people were lost. Our market was demolished, our homes were set on fire, and families were dispersed. It’s time to restore our community and repatriate our citizens,” Mnyan declared.
The state administration should direct post-massacre funds into concrete restoration projects, the community leaders said.

“To help displaced families, we are pleading with the Benue State Government to utilize the donated funds to construct a minimum of 100 two-bedroom apartments,” Mnyan said.
“Our market must be restored as well so that our people can resume their economic endeavors and rebuild their lives.”
In order to improve security and deter similar attacks, the Yelewata leaders also demanded the creation of a mobile police station and financial assistance for victims to launch small enterprises.
“It is imperative that we rebuild our market,” Mnyan emphasized.
Without it, Yelewata’s economy would be nonexistent. Additionally, we need security; having a mobile police station here will help our citizens feel secure. The surviving families will be reunited and able to return to their homes with the aid of these actions.
