A coordinated attack on armed bandits in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area has resulted in the recovery of a stockpile of weapons and the release of a kidnap victim by Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) troops.
After receiving reliable information about a gang that was keeping hostages and terrorizing civilians in the vicinity of Agera Nagu in Mbagina, Michihe Council Ward, the troops took action against the culprits, according to a statement issued Sunday by OPWS Acting Media Information Officer Lt. Ahmad Zubairu.
The soldiers, who were accompanied by the Benue State Civil Protection Guard (BSCPG), engaged the kidnappers in a heavy gunfight that compelled them to run and abandon their hostage.
Mr. Teryima Torbee, 43, was the victim and was saved without incident.
One FN rifle, five magazines, and 83 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition were found during a subsequent search of the hideout, the statement said. Since then, security patrols have been stepped up to keep the neighborhood peaceful.
Major General Moses Gara, the force commander, hailed the Civil Protection Guard’s cooperation and the troops’ prompt, professional response. In order to support security activities, he asked locals to keep supplying timely intelligence.
General Gara reaffirmed OPWS’s determination to end banditry and other violent crimes throughout Benue and neighboring states, saying, “Collaboration and synergy remain key to defeating criminal gangs and restoring lasting peace.”
