Opposition parties have urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, to cooperate or be ready to give President Bola Tinubu a second term on a silver platter.

At a meeting in Abuja yesterday, a coalition of civil society organizations, including the Civil Societies Alliance, SDMA, and the Save Democracy Mega Alliance, among others, offered this counsel.

Tony Akeni, the South South Coordinator of SDMA and one of the signatories to the post-meeting communique, clarified that the group decided that Atiku and Obi needed to work together to have an influence in 2027.

We will accomplish the pressing goal of emancipating our nation through the vote in 2027 if the electorate and members of our opposition political parties make the correct choices.

The repercussions for our country would be severe in many ways if progressive opposition leaders failed to win the presidency in 2027 due to poor choices.

Fortunately, Nigeria is endowed with two exceptional political opposition leaders today, each of whom is very competent to serve as president and lead our country back to greatness starting in 2027.

They are His Excellency Peter Obi, who is currently with the Labour Party, and His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who is currently with the African Democratic Congress, or ADC.

“Unfortunately, however, if one or both leaders make the wrong choices, the results of a months-long study and unquestionable intelligence have revealed two unavoidable facts that will undermine the chances of either Atiku or Peter Obi winning the Nigeria Presidency in 2027,” he stated.

He added that research suggested the current government was implementing policies that would prevent Atiku or Peter Obi from winning the 2027 presidential election.

These steps are only likely to be successful, he said, if “they (Atiku and Obi), make the fatal, historically regrettable and irredeemable mistake of contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platforms of two separate or competing political parties.”
