South Africa and Nigeria might be taken off the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) grey list by the end of next month.
According to a story published by Bloomberg on Tuesday, people with knowledge of the situation revealed that the task force’s assessors, who conducted site inspections in recent weeks, observed notable advancements.
In February 2023, the Paris-based FATF placed South Africa and Nigeria under heightened scrutiny due to their shortcomings in combating illicit financial flows.
The report states that a final decision is anticipated at the FATF plenary in Paris on October 24.
“Burkina Faso and Mozambique are also expected to be taken off the list, subject to confirmation by the 40 nations that make up the watchdog.”
Allspring Global Investments senior portfolio manager Lauren van Biljon commented on the development, stating that removal from the grey list would indicate the effectiveness of measures implemented since last year.
The market impact, she added, would be slight but might give asset prices a temporary boost.
The FATF is an intergovernmental policy-making organization that works to prevent the funding of terrorism and money laundering.
Financial system examination is generally more severe for nations on its gray list.
The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) said on June 14 that the nation has made progress in combating money laundering and terrorism financing, and the FATF had approved an on-site evaluation.
According to the federal government, over 730 people were found guilty of crimes related to terrorism in Nigeria in July.
