The catastrophic boat accident on the River Niger in Kogi State resulted in the rescue of 24 passengers, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), while 42 people are still unaccounted for.

It was understood that a boat carrying roughly 80 people sank on its route from Olushi village to Onugwa community in Ibaji Local Government Area on Tuesday night.
Several people have been killed and several are still missing, according to NEMA’s most recent statement, which was released on Thursday.
Zubaida Umar, NEMA’s Director General, alerted the Abuja Operations Office to aid in the rescue.
14 dead have been found so far, and search and rescue personnel are still searching the area for survivors.
NEMA, the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Red Cross, Civil Defense, and the Fire Service are among the responders collaborating with community divers.
According to NEMA, “as more information becomes available, periodic updates will be provided.”
Zakari Abubakar, the head of the Abuja Operations Office, also paid a visit to the Onugwa traditional ruler to express his condolences for the incident.
At least 26 individuals were declared dead in the accident by the Kogi State Government on Wednesday.
Governor Usman Ododo sent his sympathies to the families impacted by the incident, which Commissioner for Information Kingsley Fanwo termed as a terrible loss.
The statement said, “The Kogi State Government is with the people of Ibaji LGA during this time of sorrow.”
While calling for more stringent safety regulations on the waterways, Ododo instructed state authorities to offer victims’ relatives relief right away.
In order to stop other deaths, NEMA and the state government both emphasized how important it is to follow safety procedures.
They urged people living along rivers to always wear life jackets and to refrain from overloading boats.
