A report claiming that robbers overran troops and stole firearms in Kwara state has been denied by the Nigerian Army.
Polycarp Okoye, deputy director of army public relations, 2 Division, called the publication “false and aimed at misleading the public” in a statement released on Sunday.
Six General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and 30,000 rounds of ammunition were taken by armed bandits who ambushed soldiers in the Obanla area, according to the web report.
According to Okoye, the story was made up to incite fear and lower the spirits of soldiers serving on internal security missions.
According to him, troops from the 148th battalion (rear), who are presently conducting clearance operations throughout the states of Kogi and Kwara, have been continuing to achieve notable successes against criminal gangs.
He said that two armed bandits were killed and two brand-new AK-47 weapons were found when forces established a blocking position near the Kwara–Ekiti border in a recent encounter.
As the web platform naughtily claimed, “Army positions were never overrun, and no ammunition or weapon cache was ever lost to criminal elements.”

Okoye called on the public to support current military operations with reliable intelligence and to ignore what he called a “misleading report.”
He restated the army’s determination to destroy criminal organizations that are active in Kogi, Kwara, and the surrounding states.
In recent months, security operations have stepped up throughout north-central Nigeria, particularly in Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, in response to armed groups’ frequent attacks on key roads and rural communities.
Days after a devastating attack in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun LGA of Kwara, where suspected bandits are said to have killed at least 15 locals, the army has responded.
Hundreds of people were forced to flee Oke-Ode and the surrounding villages as a result of the attack, and schools, including the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, were relocated to Ilorin for safety.
