The Federal Government’s request that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) halt its planned warning strike was made a bit too late, according to the union.
The government’s tardy reaction to the demands was criticized by the union, which bemoaned the fact that it made the plea only two working days prior to the walkout.
In response to inquiries on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief,” ASUU President Chris Piwuna made this statement on Thursday.
“This government and this Ministry of Education have a problem in that they take a long time to respond to our requests.”
We were on the verge of starting a strike when we traveled to Sokoto for a conference. We accepted their offer of three weeks, but until the three weeks had passed, we never heard from them again. They didn’t even have the decency to say, “Oh gentlemen, we think we are running short, three weeks is around the corner, we are unable to meet with you on so-and-so date.” Not until we threatened to take action.
They urged us yesterday to refrain from taking any action. Eight years after it was signed, our 2009 agreement is still being renegotiated.
“You come to us to make an appeal two working days prior to a strike action, and we have not reached a decision on it. “I believe the appeal was made a bit too late,” he stated.
