Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has urged INEC and other pertinent organizations to confirm and authenticate all political candidates’ professional and academic credentials in advance of the general elections in 2027.
According to Obi’s statement, “Certificate Integrity and the Future of Nigerian Leadership,” which was published on X on Thursday, the legitimacy of Nigeria’s democracy rests on the honesty and openness of the process used to choose its leaders.
In the wake of scandals involving inconsistencies in his academic records, he praised Uche Nnaji’s resignation as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, calling it “a decent and honorable step.”
Kemi Adeosun, the former Finance Minister, resigned under similar circumstances under the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, he also recalled.
Obi stated, “These incidents serve as a reminder that these issues are not insignificant; they are grave criminal offenses.”
In order to maintain election integrity in 2027, he encouraged INEC to start verifying credentials submitted by all candidates, from the president to council members of local governments.

The former governor of Anambra State emphasized the importance of truth, responsibility, and openness in Nigerian leadership, pointing out that only then can public service be based on honor rather than dishonesty.
Using Ghana as an example of a nation that carefully verifies candidates’ educational claims prior to elections, Obi also called for a complete national review of the qualification and background verification procedure for all public office holders.
“INEC has adequate time to look into previous complaints regarding different types of forgeries and fraudulent statements. “All academic certificates must be submitted immediately for verification and public accessibility by all incumbents and prospective candidates,” he continued.
