A massive operation to prevent economic sabotage and improve maritime security has seen the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, BEECROFT, intercept a fiber boat carrying almost 4,000 liters of a material suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, or AGO, in Lagos’ Atlas Cove.
Speaking to reporters at a press briefing on behalf of Commander Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, NNS BEECROFT Executive Officer Captain Idongesit Udoessien stated that the interception occurred early on Saturday, October 11, 2025, after an intelligence-led surveillance operation.
The patrol crew, based in Tarkwa Bay, used the Western Regional Control Center of the Falcon Eye facility and the Nigerian Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness system to track and intercept the ship, he explained.
“A fiber boat carrying about 4,000 liters of suspected automotive gas oil was spotted and stopped by the patrol team along the approaches to Commodore Pool in the Atlas Cove general vicinity.
After spotting our staff, the suspects got out of the boat and ran away. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Lagos State Command, has subsequently received the product for additional examination and any required action,” he stated.
The naval commander pointed out that the action was in line with the Strategic Directive of the Chief of Naval Staff, which calls for maintaining a credible presence across the waterways of Lagos and the nearby creeks in order to discourage illicit bunkering and oil theft.
“This successful operation is consistent with the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to protecting the maritime environment and combating economic sabotage in all its manifestations, led by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla,” Udoessien said.
Those involved in illicit oil trade and related maritime offenses were warned to stop or face arrest and prosecution.
All criminal elements operating within its authority shall be pursued by NNS BEECROFT without compromise. We will keep stepping up patrols, intelligence-driven operations, and surveillance to make sure Lagos waterways are safe for lawful socioeconomic activity,” he continued.
