Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has stated that the most significant defection has not yet occurred, despite the fact that there have been significant PDP defections in recent years.
While some PDP governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) may have dominated national discourse, Makinde stated in his bimonthly newsletter released on Thursday that Nigerians should concentrate on when hunger and deprivation leave the country because only then can prosperity return and their pride be restored.
The governor asserts that Nigerians should focus on what really counts and resist the temptation to be duped by political realignments, which are only diversion.
Part of the message stated: “I’m sure a lot of you have been keeping up with the recent political defections, particularly the governors who have switched from the PDP to the APC and other parties.
Political analysts have been busy interpreting every handshake and silence in light of these defections. I’ve seen how, once again, the focus of our national discourse shifts from what is moving to who is moving.
The defection of hunger is the only defection that, in my opinion, really matters and hasn’t yet occurred.
“I will only be moved when hunger defect into the APC,” I stated in response to a recent news conference question concerning this wave of political cross-carpeting. I meant every word because Nigerians are having a hard time paying for their basic necessities while some are busy switching parties.
Every day, families are compelled to make difficult decisions. Rather than political realignment, these are the true problems.
“We cannot keep acting as though everything is alright just because a government official says so. The increase in inequality is what we are witnessing. The impoverished are sinking while the wealthy are adapting, and that is what needs our attention.
“Frustration and pessimism are fueled by hunger, not politics. Every political drama will continue to serve as a diversion until we address that.
