Kenneth Okonkwo, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized President Bola Tinubu over the recent pardons of national criminals.
Recall that Tinubu recently pardoned a number of prisoners, including Maryam Sanda, who had been given the death penalty for the murder of her husband.
The Nollywood actor-turned-politician, who appeared on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” program, called the presidential pardon an act of ineptitude.
Because there is no deterrence, Okonkwo also criticized the nation’s systemic corruption.
“The reality is that systemic corruption is what we are dealing with in Nigeria right now,” he stated. The lack of deterrence makes it systematic. Fighting corruption puts you in danger in a country where it is not discouraged.
“Civil personnel and politicians are now working together to exploit the process and extort Nigeria for their own gain. The problem currently is that corruption is operating on two fronts.
The fact that politicians like President Bola Tinubu will appear in the Supreme Court even if they are accused and found guilty is really upsetting. granting pardons to some corrupt individuals who have been convicted and imprisoned by the Supreme Court.
“When you pardon such individuals, you are telling people that they shouldn’t be thrown into the fray because they will return to the system as elected officials and start to take their toll on those who actually fought and are imprisoned.
Thus, in my opinion, the president’s pardon was an incompetent move.
