In the run-up to the general elections in 2027, the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, is having a difficult time as political activities slowly pick up steam.
Once hailed by some political watchers as a possible gathering point for disgruntled blocs, the ADC is facing both internal and foreign challenges.
The path to 2027 seems more difficult due to arrests and election disappointment.
Election setbacks in the FCT
The recent elections for the FCT area council were said to have shown systemic flaws in the ADC’s political apparatus. The party was unable to convert its prominence into electoral wins in important councils, despite loud campaigns and noticeable media involvement.
According to reports, the FCT failure could be a warning sign for a party looking to stabilize a larger opposition movement.
Analysts contend that although the ADC made an effort to establish itself as a viable rival to the ruling parties, its grassroots efforts were unsuccessful.
The FCT council elections, according to some political observers, gave the ADC a chance to assess its preparedness for 2027.
The result, however, sparked questions regarding its capacity for coalition formation, voter penetration, and organizational depth.
Veteran journalist and former presidential adviser Dr. Reuben Abati commented on the FCT elections, stating that the ADC was unable to convert its campaign efforts into electoral success in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, area council elections.
Speaking on the Morning Show on Arise Television on Monday, Abati made the comments.
He noted that political parties need to start reevaluating their tactics in front of upcoming elections, saying that the results of the Abuja elections indicated that the contests had been essentially determined.
“We simply hope that everyone involved, including the ADC, which held demonstrations in Abuja but received no results, will take note of this and develop strategies.
“We can’t say what that will mean in the future,” Abati stated.
Additionally, it was stated that Chidi Odinkalu, the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, criticized opposition political parties and leaders for their disorganized and poor conduct of the FCT elections.
Odinkalu claimed that the opposition did not show leadership at a crucial juncture in his remarks on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.
According to Odinkalu, the opposition is “an utter disgrace,” and the current political atmosphere shows that the parties who are supposed to act as checks on the ruling administration are not taking their responsibilities seriously.

“And I believe that anyone who examines the system must agree that there is currently no opposition at all,” Odinkalu stated.
The imprisonment of El-Rufai by the DSS, EFCC, and ICPC
The country’s political situation worsened last week after anti-corruption and security agencies, such as the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, were arrested and detained.
Despite the ruling All Progressives Congress’s insistence that these measures are a part of ongoing investigations and institutional mandates, the move has been characterized as politically charged by opposition voices.
The timing, according to some advocates, is problematic, particularly if alignments and realignments become more intense before 2027.
El-Rufai is regarded by many as one of the important ADC leaders who can put pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s reelection despite his intense controversy.
Since his arrest, the party has been uneasy.According to reports, former vice president Atiku Abubakar said on Tuesday that Nasir El-Rufai’s family, friends, and allies are extremely concerned about his health and well-being.
El-Rufai reportedly bled through the nose over the weekend, prompting Atiku to issue a warning to the administration.
Atiku, however, claimed that the Federal Government owes Nigerians explanation in a statement released via X on Tuesday.
The government has a constitutional obligation to ensure El-Rufai’s safety, dignity, access to healthcare, and his family’s and his attorneys’ presence, Atiku said.
“It is really concerning and unacceptable in a democracy that he reportedly got a nosebleed while family members were supposedly denied access.
“The legal and humane course of action is to grant him bail immediately if the authorities are unable to ensure his health and fundamental rights. If El-Rufai suffers any harm, this government will be held responsible.
In the meantime, it was remembered that the EFCC had also apprehended and arrested Abubakar Malami, a chieftain of the ADC and former Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, a few weeks prior.
N150m price for political campaign ads paid by the Enugu government
A necessary N150 million permission cost for political campaign advertising ahead of the 2026 and 2027 elections was announced by the Enugu State Structures for Signage and Advertisement Agency (ENSSAA) on Monday, sparking intense debate.

Tensions increased on Tuesday as it was reported that former presidential contender Mr. Peter Obi had been the target of an attempted murder attempt.
From Abuja, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, confirmed the assault in a statement.
According to Tanko, the event happened soon after senior attorney Olumide Akpata formally joined the ADC.
He claimed that armed men followed the group from the ADC Secretariat straight to Chief Odigie-Oyegun’s private home, where they opened fire on the gate and a number of cars parked inside the yard.
In Benin, Edo State, Peter Obi and the ADC leadership are being besieged and attacked.
They appear to have attempted to kill us by shooting at the gate and destroying multiple vehicles. Tanko wrote, “Democracy is in danger.”
Many of the party’s followers turned to social media shortly after the incident was made public, calling the outcome alarming and indicative of growing political animosity.
One of the most recognizable faces of the movement opposing the current government is still Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate who is currently in the ADC. His impressive election performance and ensuing legal battle kept him at the forefront of Nigerian opposition politics, according to reports.
The 2026 Electoral Act, recently signed
The recently enacted 2026 Electoral Act, which established both manual and electronic transmission of election results, adds still another level of complexity to the unfolding drama.
Opposition leaders believe that the act’s provision allowing for the manual transmission of election results could unintentionally encourage result manipulation and tampering.
The party called the President’s ratification of the amendment a blow to the nation’s ability to hold legitimate elections in a statement released on Thursday and signed by Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary.
The opposition party cautioned that the amendment might erode public trust in upcoming elections by introducing ambiguity and granting excessive discretion in the collection and transmission of election results.
Additionally, the ADC voiced concern that the lack of clear assurances about electronic transparency could increase election-related stress, as voters may feel pressured to stay at polling places in order to protect their ballots.
“In response to President Bola Tinubu’s actions on Wednesday, February 18, the ADC, as a duly constituted political party in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, affirms in the strongest and clearest terms possible that we are ready, willing, and prepared to defend the sanctity of Nigeria’s democracy using every constitutional and lawful means available to us.”
The party declared that it will “mobilize Nigerians toward vigilance, toward lawful participation, and toward unity in defense of their constitutional rights.”
Analyst: There is no organized opposition in Nigeria.
According to Nduka Odo, a public affairs analyst and communication specialist at Peaceland University in Enugu, Nigeria does not yet have a well-organized and cohesive opposition that can take on the ruling APC before the next elections in 2027.
Odo made the claim in an interview on Tuesday, claiming that the nation’s current political developments supported his prior claim that there was no strong opposition.
He argues that a political opposition cannot be defined by isolated voices, pointing out that coordination, force, and momentum are necessary for effective resistance.
He referred to the ADC as a “sketch” of what an opposition party ought to be and cited the party’s results in the most recent Abuja elections as proof that it had not yet properly established itself as a viable substitute.
According to Odo, the results of the polls in Abuja should give the ADC a heads-up to reorganize before 2027.
The party’s reaction to the controversial electoral act amendment bill’s passage was also criticized by the analyst, who claimed that the ADC did not move decisively.
Odo claimed that if the APC had been in opposition, it would have organized demonstrations at the National Assembly and taken the matter to global media outlets like CNN and the BBC, accusing the ruling party of trying to rig the 2027 elections.
He went on to say that the leaders of the ADC don’t seem to be united or truly devoted to creating a powerful opposition platform, and that the organization appears to be fractured and lacking in internal coherence.
Odo stated: “What I’ve said elsewhere has been confirmed by recent events in the nation.” Nigeria does not currently have any opponents.
Political opposition does not consist of lone voices. That’s what people like Peter Obi are now. Force, momentum, and coordination are necessary for an opposition.
“At the moment, ADC is a sketch of what an opposition ought to be. This was evident in the most recent elections in Abuja. It served as a heads-up for ADC to organize its actions prior to 2027.
“You can tell that the ADC still has a long way to go because they accomplished nothing significant when lawmakers enacted the blatantly contentious electoral act change. We all watched as Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu disregarded house members’ calls for order.
He continued despite the members’ requests to see what was included in the measure. The APC would have attacked the House of Representatives if they had been in the opposition.
“They would continue to demonstrate against the electoral act’s passage. They would tell stories on CNN and the BBC about how the ruling party has developed a strategy to rig the 2027 election.
However, ADC isn’t carrying out any of that. It seems as though ADC hasn’t truly come together as a single entity. They don’t appear to know what they can agree on yet. The leaders don’t appear to have faith in one another. Every one of them appears to be in and out of sync.
APC is aware of this. Before the 2027 election, I once said that the PDP would die. We’re almost done. My sole surprise is that LP didn’t actually make it through the scourge of Lamidi Apapa.
ADC appears to be in for a similar plague. Additionally, I witnessed the ruling party’s involvement in LP’s illness. In the jaundiced stand of ADC, I can also see their fingers.
“Our fledgling democracy is at risk from the ruling party’s ongoing suppression of the opposition, regardless of the method used. No elected leader should be forced to join the ruling party.
It is ridiculous and anti-democratic for members of the legislature, the main branch of government tasked with monitoring the executive branch’s excesses, to sing the president’s sycophantic anthem on the floor of legislation instead of the national anthem.
Oppositionism is a goal that transcends the pursuit of dominance. For rationality to return to Nigerian governance, organized opposition is required.
