Yhe Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has commended Governor Bala Mohammed for donating N250 million to victims of the devastating flood that ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital last week.
But even in the light of the commendation, the party reminded the governor of a different kind of flood back home and urged him to carry out similar interventions to ameliorate the plight of the people.
The PRP in a statement on Thursday signed by the state Secretary, Hon. Abdulazeez Haruna, said it was imperative that the Bauchi State government address the “festering floods of hunger, poverty, and unemployment that afflict our own citizens” as charity should be made to begin from home.
“The Peoples Redemption Party, Bauchi State Chapter, wishes to commend Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State for his generous donation of N250 million to individuals affected by the flood in Maiduguri, Borno State,” the statement reads.
“This is a commendable gesture that demonstrates the governor’s empathy and willingness to support those in need.
“However, as we commend this noble act, we cannot help but draw attention to our own unique brand of flood bedevilling people in Bauchi State.
“It is imperative that we address the festering floods of hunger, poverty, and unemployment that afflict our own citizens. After all, charity begins at home.
“Unfortunately, hunger and destitution have become the norm for many families, while unemployment and poverty have taken a toll on our youth and women.
“Our educational and health sectors are also being ravaged by a different kind of flood—the lack of proper attention and resources. Across the state, including metropolitan areas, an uncountable number of schools are struggling to operate effectively due to a lack of chairs and desks, resulting in students and pupils being forced to sit on the floor.
“The staff in these sectors are not motivated, as their salaries do not take them home, leading to a brain drain and further decline in the quality of education and healthcare.
“Furthermore, we are also concerned about the hardship faced by some of our retirees who have not received their entitlements. It is unacceptable that some of our seniors who served the state are forced to live in destitution, with no hope of relief in sight. In reality, the conditions of some Bauchi people are not so different from those affected by natural disasters in Maiduguri due to hunger and destitution.
“As we commend the governor’s donation, we urge him to also address these pressing issues in our own state. We say it loud and clear: “Charity begins at home.”
“We implore the governor to prioritise the needs of our own people, who are crying out for help and relief. We cannot offer help in solving problems outside our state while neglecting those within.
