Deji Adeyanju, a civil rights activist and attorney, has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to look into the case of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State. Adeyanju has raised concerns about the way insecurity was handled during his tenure in office and has made accusations of corruption.
In a statement released Thursday, Adeyanju called on the intelligence service and the anti-corruption agency to operate impartially and independently.
In his view, all public leaders, whether they are current or former, must be held accountable.
The former governor’s administration was widely chastised for stifling dissenting opinions, he said, calling El-Rufai’s claims of political persecution “strange.”
Adeyanju asserted that several detractors, including political analysts, clerics, and activists, were allegedly subjected to intimidation, harassment, or detention during that time.
Additionally, he requested that the DSS look into alleged controversial security measures connected to El-Rufai’s government, including as claims that violent organizations received financial inducements.
Such allegations, he said, present serious national security issues and call for a thorough inquiry.
